ELEC 226, Spring 2009
Prof. Rich Kozick

Homework 8

Date Assigned: Wednesday, March 4, 2009
Date Due: Wednesday, March 18, 2009 (at the beginning of class at 9:00 AM)

  1. Reading: In the Nilsson/Riedel text, please review Chapter 6 and read Section 6.3 carefully, with emphasis on how to include the initial voltage/current values when combining capacitors/inductors in series and parallel. Continue to study Chapter 7, particularly Sections 7.1 and 7.2.

  2. Design four high-pass filters to meet the following specifications using the concepts in the notes Insights for Filter Design and the methods from Lab 4. (That is, specify the circuits and the values of the components.)

  3. Please solve problems 10.58 and 10.59 on maximum power transfer.

  4. Please solve the following problems in Chapter 7: 3, 4, and 22.
    RL Circuits: Problems 3, 4, and 5.
RC Circuits: Problems 21 and 22.
Problems 7.5 and 7.21 are moved to Homework 9.

  5. In case you want to get a head start on Homework 9 over Spring Break, the following problems in Chapter 7 will be due on March 25:
    RC Circuits: Problems 21, 27, 30, and 32.
    RL Circuits: Problems 5, 8, 15, and 19.

    Hint for Problem 7.21:
Combine the series capacitors into an equivalent capacitor. Refer to Section 6.3 to determine the initial voltage on the equivalent capacitor. Then find i(t), which will allow you to find v1(t) and v2(t). You will find that for large t, the voltages v1(t) and v2(t) do not approach 0, and this leads to "trapped" energy.

Thank you and have a great Spring Break!
