ELEC 226, Spring 2009
Prof. Rich Kozick

Homework 9

Date Assigned: Wednesday, March 18, 2009
Date Due: Wednesday, March 25, 2009 (at the beginning of class at 9:00 AM)
** Changed to Monday, March 30 at 9:00 AM due to EE faculty candidate presentation on March 25 **

  1. Reading: In the Nilsson/Riedel text, please continue to study Chapter 7, Sections 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3.

  2. Please solve the following problems in Chapter 7:
RL Circuits: Problems 5, 8, 15, and 19 (we solved most of problem 7.19 in class on March 23).
    RC Circuits: Problems 21, 27 (change 60 ohm to 60,000 ohm), 30, and 32.

    Hint for Problem 7.21:
Combine the series capacitors into an equivalent capacitor. Refer to Section 6.3 to determine the initial voltage on the equivalent capacitor. Then find i(t), which will allow you to find v1(t) and v2(t). You will find that for large t, the voltages v1(t) and v2(t) do not approach 0, and this leads to "trapped" energy.

Thank you.
