ELEC 225, Fall 2008
Prof. Rich Kozick

Homework 1

Date Assigned: Wednesday, August 27, 2008
Date Due: Monday, September 1, 2008

  1. Reading: In the Nilsson/Riedel text, please read Chapters 1 and 2 carefully and completely, and do a quick read of Chapter 3. (I will ask you to reread Chapter 3 carefully next week.)

Also, please review your materials from ELEC 120 that pertain to the topics in Chapters 1-3 of the text.

  2. Please solve the following problems, and submit solutions in class on Monday, Sept. 1.
    Chapter 1: 1.11, 1.12, 1.15, 1.27.
    Chapter 2: 2.1, 2.2, 2.6, 2.8, 2.18, 2.20, 2.26(a).
(Note: "total power developed" means the total power from all sources that are delivering power.)
    Notes:
    • "Total power developed" means the total power from all sources that are delivering power.
    • The "power check" means that the algebraic sum of powers in the circuit must be zero. That is, the power delivered by elements must equal the power absorbed by elements.
    • For Problem 2.1, the current source should be labeled "8 A" instead of "8 V".

As you read Chapters 1 and 2 and solve these problems, please make a note of topics or example problems that you find confusing. I would be happy to receive email from you before Monday so that I can spend time in class answering your questions. If there are topics that you did not study in ELEC 120, please let me know and I'll go over them in class. You can also ask questions in class next week (and any time).

Remember, there is no lab this Thursday (Aug. 28), and I'll see you on Monday. Have a nice weekend!
